The practice box runs in your browser with BDK’s own calculator, which covers about 60 common functions. Cell references work as in Excel (B2, B2:B9). Your formulas are not saved or sent anywhere. For anything unusual, check the result in Excel itself.

How people use MATCH at work

  • Operations

Find out whether an ordered item was received: a number means yes, #N/A means no.

    =ISNUMBER(MATCH(A2,B2:B6,0))TRUE
Data: List A and list B (fictional)
  • General office

Find the position of a heading.

    =MATCH("Region",A1:E1,0)4
    Data: Office supplies sales (fictional)

Common mistakes and tips

  • Use 0 for the match type unless your list is sorted.
  • MATCH returns a position, not the value itself. Combine it with INDEX to get the value.
